Top reasons to take the CIBT Test

In 2020, the number of nonfatal injuries that happened at construction sites in the UK was 61,000. The UK construction industry is attempting to find ways to ensure that this figure is lowered, and workplace safety standards are higher.

Health & safety education and training over specific skills is similarly a must when working on-site. The CIBT test is hence essential for both, existing and aspiring workers to take. This will enhance workplace safety standards.

It is the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) that has developed the CITB Health, Safety, and Environment test. The test is oriented towards yielding to the workers the power to share their knowledge about upkeeping health and safety standards at the worksite.

The test aims at analyzing the workers’ knowledge over several topics. This will go to show that a worker’s presence on-site is safe and presents no safety risks for other workers.

From the employers’ viewpoint, when the workers have passed the CITB test, he finds confidence that his workforce can operate safely and their productivity will also be high.

Who should take the CITB test?

All candidates aspiring to have a career in the construction industry should take the CITB test. In the UK, the test is compulsory for all construction workers who intend to work in their specific fields.

Which CITB test will I take?

There are three categories of CITB tests; for Operatives, for Specialists, and for Managers & Professionals. Entry-level applicants will typically take the operative and specialist levels of CITB tests.

The structure of the CIBT test

In the CIBT test, one finds 50 MCQ questions. Each of the sections includes behavioral case studies. They need to be answered within 45 minutes. Across these 45 minutes, it is across 5 specific areas that the questions will be separated.

  • Legal and Management
  • Health and Welfare
  • General Safety
  • High-Risk Activities
  • Environment

A worker will pass when he gets 45 of these 50 questions correct.

What happens upon me failing the CIBT test?

A CIBT test will come with a free retake that a worker can make the best of. After 48 hours of taking the initial test, the retake can be booked. Even if you fail in your first take of the test, there is no need to pay for the next. But, it is only for 90 days that the retake option is valid. This phase starts after you take your first trial at the test.

What is the connection between the CITB test and the CSCS card?

CITB test will enhance your health and safety-related knowledge when working on-site. But, additionally, when you pass the test, you also become more eligible to qualify for the CSCS card. This is, however, the case only when all other relevant qualifications have been achieved.

The CITB test may be taken individually. It may alternately be taken as part of the industry-approved CSCS green laborer card package. This is one of the finest options at the entry-level when beginning a career in construction.

Health & Safety is a critical consideration and stress needs to be laid over it for any successful project. This makes the CITB test valuable.

Apart from the CITB tests, a range of valuable resources and services are offered at Construction Cards. They empower a construction worker to find the finest start to his career.

But, in the same coin, it is also important to know about the workers, the qualifications they hold, and what are their capabilities and productivity levels. These are only a few of the primary aspects that define how productive each job is going to be.

  • Dealing with inconveniences at a construction site

CPCS cardholders further have access to free learning and support materials online, to aid with their professional development and lifelong learning.

When one is a CPCS card holder, then the odds of being deemed incompetent for one’s role significantly reduce.

Why should I renew my CPCS card?

Environmental safety related concerns across the construction industry

Environmental pollution has its repercussions over nature and the ecological balance. It is vastly defined as the direct addition of third-party materials and substances to the environment.

Environmental pollution renders its effects over all varieties of flora and fauna, and human beings as well.

Accentuating safety levels across all construction environments

It is in a modern and civilized society that we live in, and managing or regulating human production activities is a must for safeguarding the environment. Just as an instance, several construction processes conducted nowadays are nature-forming factors. Most of them are projects of a magnanimous scale. In such cases, safeguarding human life and well being is always the key area of concern. It is a responsibility for the builders to undertake.

Let us take a look at an interesting fact that throws light over the above example. If we consider the volume of the excavation work that is conducted every year, it is comparable to the volume of the solids that all rivers from around the world carry to the oceans.

All buildings, residential and commercial that our nowadays construction should be designed and made in such a way that they make rational solutions available for the most telling of engineering problems. The safety levels that these buildings offer for residents and users cannot be compromised upon.

The blueprint of a building should be finalized only after the local weather and environmental conditions have been put into perspective. This will not just make the operation of the constructions reliable, they will safeguard the residents against the elements better. While the best quality of materials would be used, the construction costs would be mitigated on the account of minimum or zero wastage and the use of best practices across the construction industry.

When the workforce clears the CITB tests and acquires CSCS cards, it is the only way to ensure that the safety levels stay high and the work of construction organizations is effective. This, furthermore, works from the environmental point of view as well.

Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) was put in place in 2003 by the UK’s regulatory authorities. The purpose of introducing CPCS was to extend stricter safety and health standards for employers and plant workers alike who operate in the UK.

Just as in the case of CSCS cards, Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) has commissioned the CPCS cards as well. The CPCS cars are a critical qualification to obtain when one intends to have a serious career in the construction industry.

When a construction worker is a CPCS cardholder, it implies that the professional can operate heavy machinery safely. While he is thorough with the technological advances, he has a good know-how of the safety factors and operational health as well.

Having the CPCS card implies that the professional is technically sound, adept, and rational. This places him well to take care of the complex tasks available in the construction industry.

Whenever a construction professional embarks on a job search, he must keep in mind that if he carries a CPCS card, he’d have a competitive edge over his peers.

The key objective of the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) is ensuring that construction companies and plant operators operate in a high cognizance of the industry standards of health and safety practice. So, by possessing the CPCS card, a construction worker demonstrates having the expertise and knowledge to carry out his tasks, along with sufficient skills.

CPCS is another important effort put in place by the CITB for enhancing and improving the safety and security landscape across the construction industry. In the same coin, in case a plant worker does not carry a CPCS card, this makes him more vulnerable to authority fines. This happens when they do not find themselves in compliance with the industry regulations.

So, construction companies and plants are also compelled to hire workers who carry a CPCS card. The plant owners will also be at risk of fines, in case their employees fail to prove their capabilities towards operating and safeguarding plant machinery at factories.

What makes me eligible for holding a CPCS card?

The three major cards of the CPCS scheme are Tester Card, Competent Operator Card, and Trained Operator Card. To get any of these three cards, a candidate has to undergo a comprehensive examination process. While the theory makes a part of the examination processes, practical testing is also involved. Other factors that are similarly included are a personal evaluation of a construction worker’s skill levels, qualifications, and current experience.

  • The Trained Operator Card is also known as the Red CPCS Card. It is a first-level, non-renewable card issued for the candidates for a two-year duration. Following these two years, a candidate can apply for the Competent Operator Card.
  • The Competent Operator Card is also known as the Blue CPCS Card. It is the second level of CPCS cards after the Trained Operator Card. Possessing the Competent Operator Card implies that a construction worker can operate the plant machinery with no supervision.

To be eligible for the Competent Operator Card, a construction worker should have the Trained Operator Card. He must also pass the CPCS practical and theory tests and hold a valid CITB certificate. Competent Operator Card is a renewable card valid for five years.

  • The Tester Card is the final stage of the CPCS scheme. It is among the most advanced cards issued for plant expertise and operations. Two stages are associated with the Tester Card, Provisional Card, and Full Card. They are valid for 2 and 5 years respectively.

You can apply for CPCS cards at Construction Cards or give us a call. We will guide you through the steps that need to be taken for acquiring the same.
